Changing Faces Open Gardens
Sunday 28th June 2009

On a glorious sunny afternoon, we set off to visit the 3 gardens that were open to the public in aid of the charity called 'Changing Faces'. This event happens every year and is always well supported. The organisers of this event are David & Joanne Bird and all their many willing helpers.

David opens his garden and on the day there were stalls selling bric-a-brac, plants and of course tea and cakes were on sale. This was our first port of call, we then went on to the wonderful garden of David Beeton and the late Fred Bissett at Le Strange Cottages. The garden was magnificent as always as you will see by the photos on this page.

We then moved on to the third garden that of Stephanie Smeaton, while there we sat under a Eucalyptus tree with a cup of tea and  scones with jam and cream, this was a fitting end to a really pleasant afternoon.

Well done David and friends. David will give us a report on the afternoon when he has counted up the money for this charity.

Three Open Gardens Raise £854.00 (updated) For Changing Faces

To Our Dear Friends Old & New

Here is the report on our very successful day on Sunday 28th June in raising an astonishing amount of money for the charity Changing Faces
( www.changingfaces.org.uk ).

Joanne and myself are deeply indebted to our family and friends for all the support that they have given over the years to raise some fantastic money for this brilliant charity, this year was no exception! A grand total of £756.00 has been raised from all three gardens.

I would just like to start by mentioning a few names and I sincerely hope that I won't forget anybody, if I do please forgive me as there were so many people involved in making this such a fantastic day.

I would like to thank David Beeton of the Le Strange Cottages for opening his beautiful garden yet again this year, several people remarked on how much they had enjoyed seeing the exotic plants along with some wonderful Hostas in his large garden. It must have been quite a challenge for David as he had suffered an injury to his leg earlier in the year and not only that had lost one his dear friends, Fred Bissett just recently. I must also mention a big thank you to Maureen who helped David on the day.

I am sure all of those people who wandered round to 34a Kenwood Road would have been greeted with a wonderful reception from Stephanie Smeaton & Mo Wright.  I understand from Stephanie who came round to our house on Monday evening that both her and Mo had really enjoyed the whole event and they had kept everyone happy with their cream teas. There is also a special mention to Pat Barrow who kindly helped at Kenwood Road. Thank you everyone for all that you did, I am really grateful!

Here in The Drift we had our close family and friends to help as usual. I started the day by putting the paste tables out and would like to thank Christine, Thelma and her friend for arranging the tables with all of the bric-a-brac.  We have two wonderful OAP's who help us each year. Roy Carter arrived just before 2pm to take up his place as the man on the gate and he was taking the admission fees and Vera Dawkin was inside the house cutting the cakes for the refreshments that had been provided for those who required them. Many thanks to both of you for your kindness and for all the hard work you did.

Meanwhile I would like to say a special thanks to Jean & David Worrell (Joanne's parents) who have been working weeks ahead of this event by making and freezing cakes, providing fresh vegetables, making the tea's and running the tombola. I really don't know how we would manage without you, you're wonderful people. Thank you both!

And finally may we thank all of you very dear people who faithfully support us each year by giving prizes, plants, bric-a-brac and for the generous donations that have always been given, some of which have been posted through our door anonymously. This whole event wouldn't be possible without your support and kindness and we do really appreciate all that you've done.

Thank you so much, we look forward to perhaps seeing you all again next June?

With all good wishes

David & Joanne
