P.A.L.M.S

John has just let us know that he successfully completed the London Marathon on Sunday 13th April 2008, and below is his letter sent in to us and the Heacham Newsletter.

Dear All

Having written to you about my plans to run in this years London Marathon, I thought I would let you know that the deed was done!

I ran on behalf of P.A.L.M.S, a locally based charity working to support past and present residents of community homes for people with mental health problems.

When the pain recedes from the torturous experience of the final few miles I will carry so many fond memories of the day that I will never forget. I was in the company of tens or thousands of fellow runners and yet it felt as though London belonged to me. The sights, the crowds, the music and the overwhelming sense of collective human togetherness left an indelible impression and restored belief in the fundamental good of mankind.

There are more people to thank than can be contained in this letter regarding my money raising endeavours. From the stranger in the street encountered during training runs (and my paper round!) to the many friends, neighbours and the numerous retailers who have worked so hard on my behalf, I extend my utmost thanks and gratitude. I will mention two lads, Chip and Daniel, who donated part of their paper round money to the fund, a gesture I found truly touching.

I am awaiting all commitments to come in, but I can safely report that my original target of £850 will be considerably exceeded. I would like to thank the following business's Olivers News, Heacham Fish Bar, A E Wallis and Suttons Estate Agents for their support.

John, now in his 66th year, will once more be racking up the miles in preparation for this year's marathon. He again is running on behalf of P.A.L.M.S, a locally based organisation working to support past and present residents of community homes for people with mental health problems. Many of these residents might face a future of long-term hospital care but for the invaluable support of the charity.

On his previous run in 2005 he raised the sum in the region of £1,500, this was done by the fantastic support of local people in the village and surrounding areas. John is hoping to match that target and that is why he is again appealing to local people and businesses.

Sponsorship forms are being posted in shops and public buildings in the village, including Olivers Newsagents in the High Street where John is employed as a 'paper boy' and this forms part of his training programme for the big event.

Any donation whether large or small will be gratefully received and John thanks you in anticipation for your support. If you wish to contribute and haven't located a sponsorship form, please give John a ring - 01485 579162

Pat & myself of Malc On Line are pleased to sponsor John and wish him well, and we will keep you up to date with any news and of course photos of John in the marathon.............Good Luck John!
