Week 4 ... W/C Monday 25th September 2017
ADRIAN'S ALLSTARS (8)   RINGSTEAD RAIDERS (1)

Mick

Charley

Eileen

Mike

Paul

Steven
Monday evening 25th September in Heacham Public Hall and it was the first time the new 'Special' format was used, this new format replaces the doubles format in previous seasons. Players must be in ranking order..the match starts with 3 doubles then 3 singles and finishes with 3 doubles. This new format seemed to go down very well in the match between Adrian's Allstars and Ringstead Raiders. With the Captain of the Allstars Adrian Evans  away on holiday sunning himself plus Mike Nobes also on holiday Mick Minns was joined by Super Subs Charley Hammond and Eileen Needham. They certainly did not let the side down as they ran out winners 8-1 over the Raiders trio of Mike Patterson, Paul Humeniuk and Steven Stafford. There were four five enders and three four enders which all just went to the Allstars. Their consolation came from a singles win by Steven over Eileen.
On the same evening as the match above we had on table two the second of our new friendly matches. These are non league matches with a league team against a team of friendly super subs. The purpose of these fixtures to encourage young and not so young players to take up the game of table tennis. It puts them in a match situation but no pressure of being in a league. Teaching them good sportsmanship and scoring plus, perhaps most importantly, an enjoyable night in good company. The match this week was between BT Victory who had the experienced Steve Hales playing alongside Mary-Ann Woodhouse's two sons Joe and Jack (who both came to the coaching under Steve Goodale at the end of last season). The Friendly Super Subs had the experienced Hunnys Heroes player Rob Yarrow (standing in for Eileen Needham who moved over to table one to play in the league match). He was joined by son Alfie and back after a year out through injury Debbie Peel. After I had taken the photo which I think tells all it proved to be a enjoyable match. I moved over to score the league match but there was plenty of laughter and some good table tennis. The format was our new 'Special' format which consisted of three doubles, followed by three singles then a final three doubles. This giving a wide selection of different combinations. These matches are virtually open to anyone who came to our coaching sessions or anyone interested in having a go, we will try and fit as many people in as possible. All you need to do is be registered as an 'Associate Member of TTE which is FREE and we can do that for you). I thank Steve for sending in the report of the match which is below.

In the friendly game between Super Subs and BT Victory, it was was the young players who shone through with Alfie Yarrow (Super Subs) and Jack and Joe Woodhouse (BT Victory) performing well, not only in their play but also scoring the games and their enthusiasm and good manners. Match of the night was won by Alfie against Jack in 4 sets. Rob Yarrow and Debbie Peel completed the Super Subs, whilst Steve Hales (adopted Granddad) supported the Woodhouse boys for BT Victory. The result was an 8-1 win for the Super Subs, but that didn't really matter!

SEDGEFORD SAVAGES (2)   HUNNYS HEROES (7)

John

Kerry

Ian

Rob

Graham

Tom

Wednesday evening at Sedgeford and it was Sedgeford Savages up against league leaders Hunnys Heroes. For the Savages, refreshed from their holidays, Kerry Smith and Ian Rix and they were alongside John Marrow. For the Heroes their usual three in Rob and Tom Yarrow with Graham Keeley. The final score of 7-2 to the Heroes does not reflect what a close, hard fought match it was, three five enders and three four enders. The match started off with John and Ian losing in four ends to Graham and Tom then the first of the five enders when Kerry and Ian made in all square with a win over Rob and Tom. Back in front went the Heroes with a win for Rob and Graham over John and Kerry. Then it was the three singles games and game of the night was up first when Tom just lost out to Ian in five ends. So it was 2-2 but although some close games followed it was the Heroes who edged home in them all.

SPIVS SPECIALS (1)   SEDGEFORD STARS (8)

Jim

Stephen

Chris

Mike

Dan

Malc

Finally we move on to Thursday evening in the top room of Heacham Public Hall for the match between Spivs Specials and Sedgeford Stars. The Specials  trio of Jim Race, Stephen Jackson and playing his first match of the season Chris Griggs were up against the Stars Mike and Dan Witley and joining them Super Sub Malc Diggins. Once again it was the new 'Special' format which after its first week seems to be going down very well and an improvement to the 'Doubles' format used in previous seasons. Three doubles games to start off with and they were all very close but all went to the Stars, in game three  a five ender score of 11-7, 2-11, 8-11, 11-9 & 6-11 when Jim and Stephen just lost to Mike and Dan. Next the three singles when Malc beat Chris, Mike had a five end tussle with Jim just winning 8-11 in the fifth end. Stephen got the Specials on the scorecard with a four end win over Dan. Three more doubles followed and in game seven a really close game when Dan and Malc only just edged home over Stephen and Chris 5-11, 11-9, 10-12, 14-12 & 10-12. Another four ender followed when Mike and Dan beat Jim and Chris. Finally Mike and Malc beat Jim and Stephen and with it an 8-1 win for the Stars.

NEXT WEEKS FIXTURES...SECOND WEEK OF THE TWO PLAYER LEAGUE (ALL 8 TEAMS PLAYING)

All matches being played on Monday 2nd October in Heacham Public Hall, each of the 8 teams playing two matches during the evening.

Once again we will start setting up between 6.15 and 6.30pm and would appreciate anyone who could arrive a bit early between 6.30 and 7pm to give a hand to make sure we are all set up ready for a close as possible start at 7.15pm.

To play in the Heacham League all you need to do is be TTE registered. If any player is looking for a game please get in touch. Once again we are looking for 'Super Subs'. So what is a Super Sub? They are players who play in other TTE affiliated leagues but would like an extra match or two or more during the season. There is no cost to be a Super Sub as long as you are TTE registered. There is no commitment on your part, if a team is short of a player they will have a list of Super Subs and contact details. They will contact you asking if you can help out and it is your choice to say if you are available or not.
